Work Project to Kenya

October 2009

The Commission is sending a team of volunteers to Kenya to renovate a primary school at Pala. A grant from the Rotary club of Jersey supported by the local charity Help From The Rock has already built a block of new classrooms and the project team will undertake work on the dilapidated older part of the school.

It is impossible to tell before hand what stage this work will be at but work could well include some bricklaying, replacing roof panels, making concrete floors and painting amongst other tasks. For some three years now Jersey has been supporting the village of Nyalkinyi in the Homa Bay district of Kenya. The village of Pala, designated by the Kenyan Government as an area of high poverty, is close to Nyalkinyi and the two are developing close ties as a farm supported by Jersey is sited between the two villages, it is hoped that the farm will eventually provide food for the schools in both villages.

10 volunteers will be undertaking this project which will be over a three week period. Ideal for anyone who has not yet undertaken a project with JOAC, only the team leaders have previous experience of such trips.
