June 2010
The aim of the Uganda 2010 project is to develop a 25 acre plot of land to provide food for school meals and an agricultural training centre based in Kaiiso village, Luweero District.
The people of Luweero District suffered the worst of the atrocities during the wars and purges inflicted on many innocent Ugandans in the 1980’s. The community is now recovering from the awful effects of this era. The concerns today also include the many orphans resulting from the effects of both malaria and aids, and also extensive unemployment of young people.
It is against this background that a local community group, “Food for Schools-Luweero (Uganda)” is setting up this project to combat these issues affecting the everyday lives of the young people of Luweero. The project is the brainchild of Mrs Ester Kawayo, who will shortly be returning from the UK to her birthplace in Luweero to realize her dream of implementing a project that will provide a permanent and sustainable source of food and training opportunities for a group of needy children.
In recent years JOAC have sent teams to this area to carry out projects to develop basic but essential community facilities, these range from nurse’s accommodation, water supply, primary schools, a skills training centre and most recently a farm project in August 2009. Collectively these projects have provided a significant improvement to many young lives.
The main objectives that Ester and her group of helpers seek to achieve are:
• To provide a schools feeding programme for orphans and needy children
• To provide training and reduce unemployment of young people
• To act as a demonstration unit for the community to improve farming methods.
The 2010 JOAC volunteers will work alongside the local workforce to assist with:
Funding for all of these items is provided by JOAC.
During team building activities prior to departure in July the volunteers will have the opportunity to raise funds for the purchase of livestock and farm equipment.
