Uganda 2012
Community Works Project
Background
The aim of this project is to build teachers accommodatio at Mifumi Primary School, Tororo, Eastern Uganda. Mifumi Primary School started life as a series of dilapidated shacks with some lessons taking place under trees. Development of the school arose from one family’s dream to provide quality education to the children of Mifumi village. This gave rise to the MIFUMI Project. Support came from far and wide and resulted in the construction of new classrooms and the addition of a nursery. These classrooms soon filled up with children eager to learn. Further classrooms were built as demand grew which in turn led to the need for more teachers. Due to Mifumi’s rural location, finding qualified teachers willing to relocate proved a challenge. Through support from JOAC and the Trinity Trust (Jersey), MIFUMI was able build staff accommodation a short distance away at Mifumi Health Centre. Clean water was also installed through a well and pump system. This current project will see the construction of 3 further accommodation units near the school. This will enable the school to attract qualified teachers to provide a high standard of education to over 600 students. Through this project, we are keeping alive the dream of bringing quality education to the children of Mifumi village and beyond.
The Team
Over the years JOAC has found that a Team of equal numbers of males and females with an age range of 18 to 70 works well. Ideally we would wish to include some skilled tradesmen and a nurse but it is most important to have the willingness to pitch in and work hard from those less or unskilled. For those yet to undertake an Overseas Aid project, this project would be an ideal starting point as being closer to home and for the duration of only three weeks, it will give the experience necessary for those interested in undertaking other projects with Overseas Aid further afield.
Applicants should be reasonably fit and should not suffer from any health problems which would prevent them from carrying out physically demanding work for eight hours per day, five and a half days per week. It will also be hot, so team members should be prepared to work in hotter conditions than they are probably used to.
Each volunteer, if accepted, will be expected to make a contribution of £550 to the project cost and to provide all his/her personal kit. £50 is returnable at the end of the project providing the volunteer has maintained a good standard of behavior throughout and has completed the de-brief form and attended the teams welcome back session upon return. A recommended kit list will be provided during the training period.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided in Mama Mifumi’s house. She is the inspiration behind the original project. The house can sleep 10 people in four large rooms. There is additional space for 4-6 people in an adjacent building. There is running water and electricity although there are sometimes power cuts and no hot water in the taps. The house is in Mifumi village and is within walking distance of Mifumi Primary School and Mifumi Health Centre. The house is within a secure compound with gardens and a small farm and has hosted two work parties before.
Training and Fund Raising
Applicants should be prepared to give up much of their free time prior to departure to prepare for the Project. Training will include keep fit, first aid and training in technical skills. Fund raising is an essential part of the preparation. The funds raised will be used to improve the lives of people in the local community, in areas decided by the Team. Fund raising is an important means of building Team spirit and cohesion. Attendance at team meetings is essential.
Travel & Proposed Dates
Proposed dates are 1-22 July 2012 when weather conditions should be at their best. Transport would be via plane to Entebbe International Airport. The group would be picked up by the MIFUMI Uganda team and taken to Tororo where they would spend the night. Transport to Mifumi Village would be provided the following day. A vehicle and driver will be stationed in Mifumi Village (either at the health centre or Mama Mifumi’s house) for use by the group during their stay.
Local Customs
It is essential that the Jersey Team does not, in any way, offend the local population. All applicants must be aware that restrictions will apply on alcohol and tobacco as well as clothing. Swearing is not acceptable at any time and displays of intimacy may also offend. The Team will be expected to attend church on some Sundays. If a potential volunteer feels that these rules are too restrictive, he/she should not apply.
Free Time
The team will, of course, have some free time. They will have the opportunity to see some of the local scenery.
